Solid Waste Management

Why Solid Waste Transfer Stations Important for Waste Management?

In accordance with the Turkish Metropolitan Law No. 5216, it is the responsibility of the municipalities of the district and municipality to collect domestic solid wastes in their residences and bring them to solid waste transfer stations. It is the responsibility of the Metropolitan Municipalities to transport these wastes to the solid waste disposal facility.

Transfer stations play an important role in solid waste management, making solid waste transportation efficient and effective. Transfer stations act as a step between collecting solid wastes and delivering them to the facilities where they will be disposed of. Domestic and domestic graded industrial solid wastes brought to the stations by collecting vehicles are loaded to larger volume vehicles and transported to disposal facilities. One of the most important reasons for the need for transfer stations is to reduce the transportation cost of waste to disposal facilities. It is possible to design and operate transfer stations in different ways, but generally the method used includes compacting wastes and reducing their volume. Thus, the high transportation costs in solid waste management becomes more economical. In addition, thanks to the transfer stations, this time can be directed to collection operations by saving the time spent on transportation especially in residential areas at long distances; The amount of fuel used, therefore, air emissions are reduced, and faster wear of the roads is prevented. Most importantly, transfer stations contribute to reducing the traffic load in cities with high traffic such as Istanbul.
